LEad Grower

Summary

The Lead Grower is responsible for managing and advancing Camphill Soltane’s agricultural initiatives, including garden planning and production. This position works collaboratively across departments, engages with diverse community partners and volunteers, and ensures sustainable food production that supports the organization’s mission. The Lead Grower will oversee garden upgrades, lead seasonal planning, mentor employees with intellectual differences, and provide key performance tracking to measure outcomes and growth.

Supervisory Responsibility

Essential Functions

  • Core Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with community partners to plan and execute garden upgrades while adhering to budget.

  • Participate in crop planning to ensure consistent and diverse seasonal produce.

  • Work collaboratively with Soltane and community partner departments to support organizational mission and goals.

  • Supervise and work alongside volunteer groups of various ages, abilities, and backgrounds to complete agricultural projects.

  • Perform physical labor with and without volunteer support, including:

  • Bed preparation, planting, weeding, thinning, cultivating, pruning, trellising, harvesting, washing, packing, loading, and delivering produce.

  • Operating mowers, weed whackers, and other equipment as needed.

  • Maintain effective communication across departments to ensure continuity of operations.

  • Track and report Key Performance Indicators (e.g., crop yields, volunteer hours, participant engagement).

  • Communicate regularly with the Director of Land Planning and Protection regarding progress, challenges, and resource needs.

  • Represent Camphill Soltane at community events and meetings, maintaining positive and professional relationships with stakeholders.

  • Lead volunteer groups and facilitate agreed-upon classes as requested.

  • Accepts and performs other duties as assigned

  • Lead and support staff and volunteers in alignment with Soltane’s policies and applicable laws.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; degree in agriculture, horticulture, or related field preferred.

  • Experience in food production such as large-scale gardening, small-scale farming, or greenhouse management.

  • Prior experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental differences preferred.

  • Strong leadership and organizational skills with ability to delegate and manage tasks.

  • Excellent communication skills (written, oral, and active listening).

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Experience working with diverse populations and volunteer groups.

  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and G Suite.

  • Ability to operate or willingness to learn to operate farm equipment (mowers, tractors, implements).

  • Demonstrated commitment to disability inclusion and community engagement.

  • Familiarity with the Camphill movement or intentional communities is a plus.

  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to complete a criminal background check and fingerprinting as required.

Intellectual Demands

  • Must be able to have skills surrounding problem solving, money management, organizational skills, interpersonal skills, creativity, multitasking, and working in a variety of work locations

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to lift and move objects weighing 40+ pounds.

  • Physical activity includes kneeling, crouching, reaching, pulling, grasping, bending, twisting, and repetitive motion of hands and wrists.

  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, and perform agricultural tasks for up to 8 hours per day on uneven ground.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to work in varied weather conditions (heat, cold, humidity, precipitation, wind, sun).

  • Comfortable working in potentially noisy or distracting environments (outdoor and indoor).

Performance Reviews

  • 90 Day Performance Review

  • Yearly Reviews will then be conducted on an annual basis
