Rhythm of Life

Apple Harvest Celebration

The Camphill Soltane community is a dynamic mix of approximately 90 people, spanning many generations, cultures, and ranges of ability.

The community has an active cultural and spiritual life which follows a rhythm that is in tune both with the seasons and the major Christian festivals of the year. Students often have the opportunity to connect with religious services of a specific faith in the local area and/or participate in occasional lay services held at Camphill Soltane. Throughout the year, the community as a whole steps back from the daily schedule to allow opportunities for people to reflect and inwardly prepare for the seasons and festivals, and to create special gatherings and events. SingingShared experiences are important at Camphill Soltane, both on a community level and household level. A community-wide morning meeting, held twice weekly, begins with a verse and often a shared song (left); the meeting provides a space to share important news and celebrate special occasions in people's lives. Festivals are often celebrated with a community-wide play or other shared activity.  Weekends are times for houses to make outings as a group, with popular destinations including the numerous cultural attractions of Philadelphia, the recreational opportunities and picnic facilities of Marsh Creek State Park, or the scenic beauty of Longwood Gardens. Houses also take a "house vacation" in the early summer to destinations of interest, providing a welcome break and change of scenery at the end of an intense academic or work year.

Parent Madge M. writes, "Community did not stop within the boundaries of the properties on Nantmeal Road. Intentionally, Soltane extended [my son] into the community beyond – to the YMCA and swimming, to church and families of friends, and mentors engaging with him about his interests and goals, supporting his volunteer work, and having fun with him."

While many opportunities for exploring interests are provided within the community, Camphill Soltane has strong ties with the wider community, as well. Community members frequent the local public library and YMCA, as well as the numerous bookstores, coffee shops, and other offerings in the area.  Two other Camphill communities close by, Camphill Special School and Camphill Kimberton Hills, provide many opportunities for building relationships and sharing events.
