Camphill Soltane offers young adults with developmental disabilities a five-year continuing education experience. Our Learning for Life program consists of a 3-year Education Program followed by a 2-Year Transition Program. The Learning for Life program aims to provide a parallel to the very best elements of the college/university experience for individuals with developmental disabilities for whom this experience would normally be inaccessible.
During the 3-year Education Program, students take part in classroom instruction on liberal arts themes such as history, geography, and mythology, small group instruction in reading, writing, or math, life skills classes in cooking and computers, arts and music programs such as painting, stained glass, and woodworking, movement and recreational activities such as nature exploration and seasonal sports, and pre-vocational experiences in a number of different settings such as bicycle repair, pottery, and gardening. The Education Program is modeled on Waldorf -style curricula and teaching methods, and emphasizes an approach to learning that engages the whole person.
Students entering the 2-year Transition Program are helped to imagine and prepare for their future steps after graduation from Camphill Soltane. Person-Centered Planning processes help each person identify their interests and goals, and look at future directions in the context of their abilities and family situations. The Soltane Works program offers internships to transition students in the Textile Enterprise, Iduna's Cafe, Community Services, the Land and Estate crew, and several off-site employers, each of which provide students with an opportunity to become familiar with the demands of the workplace, the responsibility of holding a job, and to help people learn specific skills or trades. Students in the Transition program also take part in learning visits to explore different lifestyle options for their post-Soltane experience. Although the emphasis in the Transition Program is on preparation for the future, students continue to have access to elective classes offered through the Education program.
